The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) was formed in 1993 to specifically represent secondary school, technical institution, and tertiary college teachers—separating from KNUT’s broader mandate.
After nearly a decade of legal struggle, KUPPET gained official recognition in 2002
Collective Bargaining & CBAs – Securing salary increases, allowances, and better working conditions for post-primary teachers.
Legal Representation – Assisting members facing wrongful dismissal, labor disputes, or unfair employment practices.
Professional Training – Promoting continuous development in pedagogical skills and modern methodologies
Policy Advocacy – Actively contributing to curriculum reviews, resource planning, and national education policy forums.
Social Welfare Support – Facilitating programs around financial stability, health, and overall wellbeing for educators
Teacher Welfare = Student Success: Better pay and conditions lead to improved teacher morale, retention, and ultimately student learning outcomes.
Influencing Reforms: KUPPET ensures policy decisions reflect teachers’ realities—such as equitable resource allocation and curriculum relevance.
Encouraging Innovation: By pushing for training and capacity building, KUPPET supports modern teaching approaches aligned with national education goals.
Defending Rights: Through its union platform, teachers can safely pursue grievances and uphold their professional dignity
Government Resistance: Budget constraints often delay or weaken negotiated gains, leading to tensions and strikes.
Internal Leadership Issues: Infighting can distract from KUPPET’s advocacy role and weaken its negotiating position.
Balancing Act: Aligning teacher-centered demands with broader national education strategies remains complex
